Cannabis – from illegal drug to medical panacea Cannabis is classified as a so-called “soft” drug which potentially lowers the inhibition threshold for consuming “hard” drugs like heroin or cocaine. Possession of cannabis was prohibited worldwide in 1925 but today, limited consumption is legal in various countries, for example Canada, the Czech Republic or Israel. Uruguay was the first country to legalize the sale, cultivation, and distribution of cannabis in 2013. As the benefits of cannabis for medical treatment have been proven by several studies, many countries have started the process of legalizing the use of cannabis under strictly regimented conditions. In 29 states of the USA, the purchase of cannabis for medical reasons has been allowed since 2016, one year later it was also legalized in Germany.

Simatek Drum Feeder with Forced Feeding System A pendulum bucket elevator is the obvious choice for gentle and flexible conveying of bulk products, but when it comes to fine powders and very abrasive products this is still a challenge. Now Simatek Bulk Systems introduces a new Forced Feeding System which – in the combination with other initiatives – makes pendulum bucket elevators very suited for conveying complex powders that are non-easy flowing, fragile, abrasive or explosive. By adding a screw feeder module to the patented Simatek Drum Feeder it is possible to secure a high filling degree of the elevator buckets. This feeding system is based on individual batch feeding of the elevator buckets without product spillage. In combination with the Simatek Drum Feeder it is possible to convey with elevator buckets without overlap. This is to eliminate mechanical contact between the buckets, friction and the use of guides. Conveying with FRB buckets will ensure much more operational reliability as well

Tate & Lyle bought a series of chain conveyors from Jansen&Heuning in 2003 for filling their soaking tubs with corn. In continuous operation the chain conveyors have transported thousands of tons of corn, which caused some wear after 15 years. Replacement by stainless steel was possible, but had to be performed in just 2,5 days due to the great pressure on production. The four Jansen&Heuning mechanics managed to do this within the set time by working hard, using their experience and of course an optimal preparation.

Ausloos Verpakkingstechniek (Aarschot - Belgium) has implemented an automatic bagging unit for open mouth bags for the packaging of buckwheat flakes in paper bags in a brand-new factory hall of a Dutch bio-grain processor. The filled 20-25 kg bags are then stacked on pallets with a Winner 500 robot palletizer. This installation fitted perfectly into the sustainable project of the customer.

Last spring, Vortex consulted with a horse feed producer to assist with a process need. At this facility, the client is producing forage cubes. Upstream in the process, bales of hay are broken down and minor ingredients are added before the raw materials are formed into cubes (approximate size: 75 – 100 mm square). Once formed, the cubes are transferred into cloth silos. Below each silo, a common belt conveyor transfers forage cubes to a packaging line, where they are loaded into bulk bags. Vortex was tasked with identifying a solution for discharging forage cubes out of the cloth silos, down onto the belt conveyor. Primarily, the client is concerned with forage cube quality and thus, the cubes cannot be damaged upon gate closure. Upon careful analysis of the application, the Vortex Roller Gate was recommended.
